I was reflecting back on some notes I made last spring when I had an opportunity to hear Penny Simkin speak on birth practices in this country and how we as doulas, nurses, and educators can help reverse the trend of early interventions in labor.
One of the statistics she threw out to us that has continued to weigh heavily on my heart is that 30% of the many women surveyed viewed their birth experience as traumatic. 30%!!!!!!! That means one out of every three women giving birth is being traumatized!!!! Ack! (This is me grabbing my head and shaking it in abject dismay). I can only imagine how that trauma might effect the mother-baby bond, the bond with their partner, and the mothers feelings regarding her body, as well as her ability to be an effective parent? 30%!!!!
I also noted that our national c-sections rate is over 30%. Hmmmmmmm......
